The Universiteit van Amsterdam is one of the major comprehensive universities in Europe with 22,000 students and a budget of 487 million euros. It has a strong internationalization programme and offers a number of courses in Dutch and English. There are seven faculties covering humanities, social and behavioural sciences, law, economics and business, medicine and dentistry, and science. The Universiteit van Amsterdam aspires to be a internationally leading, multidisciplinary university where research is carried out, as well as education offered and followed in a broad range of disciplines. Furthermore, the university wishes to contribute in an active manner to social developments at regional and international level, in particular in the region of Amsterdam.
The Faculty of Economics and Business was established in 1922, starting with 111 students. It now has some 3000 students. The Faculty has excellent facilities, including computer and library services and a restaurant. The Faculty has an excellent national and international reputation and has a large international network in research and eduation study abroad programmes. It has a top-10 ranking in research among European Economic departments.
The Universiteit van Amsterdam Business School is responsible for academic training and research within the business disciplines of AmSEB: Finance & Control, Accounting, Auditing, Financial Planning, and Business and Real Estate. Apart from regular programmes such as the master’s in Business Studies, the Business School offers a variety of executive master’s programmes attached to research groups with a strong international profile. An MBA programme started last September.
The Tinbergen Institute is the institute of economic research of the Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam (EUR), the Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA), and the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU). The Institute is founded in 1987 and named after Professor Jan Tinbergen, Dutch Nobel Prize laureate in economics in 1969. The Tinbergen Institute is located in Amsterdam and Rotterdam
SEO Economic Research carries out independent applied economic research on behalf of the government and the private sector. The research of SEO contributes importantly to the decision-making processes of its clients. SEO Economic Research is connected with the Universiteit van Amsterdam, which provides the organization with invaluable insight into the newest scientific methods. Operating on a not-for-profit basis, SEO continually invests in the intellectual capital of its staff by encouraging active career planning, publication of scientific work, and participation in scientific networks and in international conferences.
Amsterdam Center for Law & Economics The Amsterdam Center for Law & Economics (ACLE) is a joint initiative of the economics and law faculties of the Universiteit van Amsterdam. The objective of the ACLE is to promote high-quality research in the fields at the interface of law and economics. Located in the heart of Amsterdam's old city, the ACLE presently associates around twenty scholars in law and economics, ranging from full professors to PhD students. The ACLE is directed by Arnoud Boot. Co-directors are Giuseppe Dari-Mattiacci and Maarten Pieter Schinkel.
The international research network ENCORE (Economics Network for Competition and Regulation) was launched in 2003. The main objective of ENCORE is to exploit the available scientific knowledge on competition and regulation to benefit and improve policy making. Formal and informal channels are used to answer general and specific policy questions drawing on economic models and results. ENCORE also acts as an intermediary in commissioning strategic and applied research and is instrumental in stimulating undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate teaching in the area of competition and regulation.
Amsterdams Instituut voor Arbeidsstudies AIAS is an interdisciplinary institute for research and teaching of the University of Amsterdam bringing together economics, law, psychology, sociology and health with a focus on labour.
The Center for Research in Experimental Economics and Political Decision-making is a research institute at the Faculty of Economics and Econometrics, University of Amsterdam. Its research program consists of three main projects: - Economics of Political Decision Making. The project focuses on the analysis of the behavior of political decision makers, its consequences for government policies, and the impact on the economy.
- Bounded Rationality and Institutions. In this project fundamental aspects of individual decision making are investigated.
- Experimental Economics. Here the method of laboratory experimentation is used to study economic problems. Research in this project is particularly stimulated by, and provides feedback for, the two projects mentioned above.

The key focus of the SCHOLAR project is twofold. Firstly it is on the efficiency of the transition from education and the labor market and its consequences for economic development. Secondly it is on the equity aspects of the transition between education and the labor market.
THE TRANSFORMATION OF EUROPE (TOE) is a centre of expertise on monetary, fiscal and institutional aspects of Europe in development.
EUROPE IS THE LOCUS of many new economic developments. For example, national monetary policies have been replaced by a common monetary policy, a number of Eastern European countries is likely to join the European Union in the coming years, economies are ever getting more integrated and they all face important demographic changes. TOE explores the developments in Europe in the areas of macroeconomics, international economics, monetary economics and transition economics. Our goal is to enhance our understanding of these developments and enable us to come up with policy recommendations.
Amsterdam School of Real Estate The Amsterdam School of Real Estate, established in 1989, is a joint initiative of real estate industry organizations, national government and the Universiteit van Amsterdam. The core objective is to gather, bring together centrally and make available national and international knowledge in the field of real estate. Real estate studies are a specialist discipline, covering the development, financing and operation of real estate. Thanks to the involvement of both the university and industry, the Amsterdam School of Real Estate fulfils an important bridging role between academic scholarship and industry practice. The Center for Nonlinear Dynamics in Economics and Finance (CeNDEF) is a multi-disciplinary research group, started in October 1998, by a Pionier-grant from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). CeNDEF is located at the Department of Quantitative Economics, of the Faculty of Economics and Econometrics of the University of Amsterdam.
